A Day Of Explosions. Weapons list as shot and as they appeared: .357 Magnum,.50 caliber Caplock Pistol using 33 grains of ff equivalent (pyrodex pellets), .357 Magnum, .50 caliber Caplock Pistol, .357 Magnum, .22 Magnum, .357 Magnum, .357 Magnum, .357 Magnum, .357 Magnum, 1/4 Stick of dynamite. Nothing at all was hurt during the filming of this video. An ant may have perished from the blast of the quarter stick. This can neither be confirmed nor denied.
If you were to choose a .22 LR handgun for personal defense, primary carry or backup, what type of ammo do you think is most effective? This is the first in a series of ammo tests with a short barrel .22 semi-auto; Ruger SR22P with a 3.5″ barrel. I am using the CCI Mini-Mag 40 grain copperplated solid in this test, distance of 10 feet with the SIM-TEST media (calibrated ballistic gel) and 4 layers of denim per IWBA protocol. My primary objective with this ammo choice is to get an idea of penetration possibilities compared to JHP’s tested in larger calibers, plus a point of comparison for .22 LR hollowpoints that will be tested in the future. While the .22 LR is essentially the “bottom floor” or last resort in caliber choice for self-defense, the compact nature of these handguns combined with low recoil and shootability could make it a viable choice for some folks. As noted in the video, I am NOT advocating this option, simply providing data that might help you make a decision. a quick overview of my pistols! hope yall’ enjoy it! i apologize for being all slow in the video, i didn’t sleep last night at all. stayed up doing cool stuff. my personal favorite is my NAA Super companion. it is fantastic with that rear sight, and you can load it with Bull’seye smokeless powder. that will bump you up to .32 ACP ballistics. you can load your standard 30 grain conical bullets in it, you can shoot airgun pellets with percussion caps, you can even shoot shot out of it. my favorite load is 7 grains of Triple Seven that’s real compacted, underneath a plated copper hollow point pulled from some cheap 550 Federal .22 ammo. best part is you get just enough powder to shoot the .22 LR companion. the cylinder pin hasn’t bent from my use of powders. it’s just great! i really like the NAA blackpowder revolvers!
This is probably a good *Rifle* round. I used a pistol, so it did not fragment as intended due to the lower velocities. It did exhibit cavitation and disruption at about 4 inches depth, and i assume the bullets started to tumble or yaw or spin or something after the polymer tips got blown out.
Out takes from my video of shooting home made ballistics gel. My kitty cats wouldn’t leave me alone that day and I had to keep chasing them away from the shooting area. Plus I shot that gel with my pistols too. My .22 LR & magnum Heritage revolver, my .357 mag Smith and Wesson with hallow points, and my 1911 45 ACP with hallow points.
In this vid, I pepper a 1-foot cube of ballistics gel with my 22 magnum at a range of 3 feet. I was so close that the unburnt powder was actually imbedded in the gel.
