Kel-Tec SU-22: “4 Pounds of Tactical” by Nutnfancy

Many things make the Kel-Tec SU-22 cool. First and foremost the weight: this little Tactical .22 only weighs 4 lbs! You will be amazed at the Philosophies of Use that this lightweight will open for you: recreational, tactical training, backpacking, or even survival rifle uses are all appropriate. Moreover the light weight makes shooting and carrying the SU-22 for the female or young shooter more enjoyable. It is a “Tactical .22″ as I have been calling them for some time. It mimicks the centerfire Kel-Tec SU-16 series of rifles (reviewed, rec’d by me at www.youtube.com ) and many of its components are directly interchangeable. Of course you won’t get the recoil, range, ToF, and noise of a the .223 SUs, but the ergonomics and battery of arms are similar. Another big SU-22 attraction is price: about 0 lower than many other tactical .22s. Remember in this category, threaded muzzles, Picatinny rails, polymer furniture, larger capacity magazines, sling attachments, etc are found and they often add cost. But the SU-22 provides most of those features for less. Reliability is good when the gun is kept clean. In my extended firing (without cleaning) that the SU-22 would experience failures to go into battery when dirty (no matter the ammo). When kept clean with appropriate lubrication, the little SU-22 cranked along with few jams, even with affordable bulk Federal .22 ammo (Remington Golden .22 is garbage and choked repeatedly in the tests…not recommended). Kel-Tec wisely uses

What kind of video camera and editing software do you use to keep such high quality throughout the process? My video cam takes excellent video but my editing software ruins the quality.

Uh oh, Multicam LBV on the table!

That ammo is under powered.. Our federal dealer said that to make it so cheap for wal-mart to sell, they use a different powder and this makes the round “Under-Powered” or an RP round. Any Federal brown box uses the cheaper powder, and any federal red box aka American Eagle uses the original powder.

@Ranger4321 Problem #1 is that if you are shooting a thick target such as a deer, you may not have the penetration needed to strike its vitals. Even if you hit the heart with a .22 , it won’t do much good since it could crawl off and die and you have just wasted your ammoProblem #2 is that at any significant distance, a .22LR may not have enough force to penetrate the bone. If you target a person’s chest cavity @ 100 yds, if the bullet hits a rib instead of in between, it may not go straight in.

@Ranger4321 While shot placement can make a huge difference, the level of penetration achieved by a .22LR isn’t enough to get the job done. 5.56 carries more velocity and 7.62 carries much more mass, both are more effective against large game.

    Epic review as always Nutn.

I can’t even get these in my Gunshop right now!

SOMETIMES Kel-Tech gets it right. Sometimes some of their products seem a bit “unpolished”. I have personally never had an issue with any Kel-Tech I’ve owned but sometimes I hear of reliability issues from customers. Taken with a grain of salt because not all of them are as experienced as some of us.

    I like Kel-Tech as a company tho.

Hey Nutn, I noticed the Remington 597 wasn’t mentioned at all in this vid compared to the 10/22 review. I’m looking at getting a 597 and you’ve got me worried that you’ve found something really off about it. I really dig the 2nd kind of cool on the 597 VTR with the quad rail and adjustable stock, but the 1st kind of cool means a lot to me as well.

In my opinion the .22LR is a Survival round. The main word is “survival”. Food. Shoot your squirrel or rabbit with a .223 or a 7.62 x 39 you will have less meat on your plate than if you shot it with a .22LR. Just my opinion. Thanks Nutn

  11. 11 Ranger4321 said at 10:20 am on September 24th, 2010:

people dont realize that the .22 LR is just as effective and lethal as a 5.56, and ill go so far as to say .308 (7.62) in a survival situation because youre not going for distance as much as you are accuracy. being heart shot or head shot to the animal that youre hunting. A guy i used to work with killed a full size deer with a .22 LR.

    Hi PFI,

Do you have a website where to order? This will be my first gun :P

  23. 23 jab0505 said at 10:20 am on September 24th, 2010:

@TapRackBoom yeah.. because the kel tec is so light it is pretty snapy the recoil felt on the glock is much less. and i agree glocks are everywhere but the glock 26 is my fav ccw as of now. when i got the pf9 i got it because of the ease of carry and it was great cause in most cases i could just throw it in a pocket holster and go but i started having the failure to eject problem so i got rid of it and carried my kimber until i got the g 26. (still love my kimber but its a fullsize)
