Kel-Tec PMR-30 Review

Posted: July 22nd, 2011 | Author: zackpow | Filed under: 22 Magnum Pistol | Tags: , , , , , , |

Kel-Tec PMR-30 Review This is a .22 magnum semi auto pistol with a magazine capacity of 30 rounds. It weighs in at an incredibly light 13.6oz and I have to say that handling it is reminiscent of playing with a toy gun. It’s not a toy. For this review I cover my first impressions and then fire 100 rounds (mag dump, benchrest) to test the reliability and accuracy. During the test I experienced 7 failures (or 7% of the rounds fired) and 8 keyhole shots. The keyhole issue was supposed to be resolved with a new 1:11 twist barrel. Obviously it did not work as intended. The failures, keyholes and accuracy issues could have all been caused by user error, the lack of a break-in period for this gun, or a more likely scenario: it’s a new platform that has some bugs to be worked out. Either way, I will report back as the gun gets more use. More information can be found for the products seen in this video at: Kel-Tec www.keltecweapons.com CCI Ammunition www.cci-ammunition.com

I believe the twist rate for the new barrels is 1:11.

It does feel like a toy, and it really got me running the other, it’s also feels like it will explode in your hand or break down when you drop it. :x

@SlaughterOtter - you are correct, KTs have a reputation for needing 500 rounds to break in, either that or you have to do some serious sanding/polishing. I’ve never had a gun with so many issues out of the box though.

I wouldn’t call it a jam-o-matic until after 100rnds, especially considering it’s a rimfire. Give it some time to break in, hopefully it will start running better. However, that accuracy, keyholing, and poor plastic molding is inexcusable.

@shagonator2000 - I already have a couple of .45acp handguns (and one 45 colt), besides I wanted a .22WMR in a pistol length barrel to test vs. the 5.7.

No, I didn’t polish the feed ramp, I just cleaned it thoroughly. If you get the chance to handle one, break it down and check out the parts. I’m guessing that you’ll find that there’s more to it than the guns you are used to.

should have got a hi- piont. lol i ran over 600 rnds though it not one miss fire .but thats in 45cal.. did u polish the feed ramp? we already know the 5/7 will blow that 22. away.lol speed alone will do more damage.

put the old barrel in and see how she shoots I have not seen any keyholing with it but i was not looking for it. I have about 400 rounds threw mine. My kel tec has been a better gun than my FN

@13ccasto - well I hit 100 rounds on the first day out - I’ll probably run another 100 through it next week. I’ll let you know if the performance improves…

  10. 10 AmendmentNo2 said at 5:32 am on July 22nd, 2011:

@Hellathome - sure I had fun shooting it… right up until the time I realized that it wasn’t firing because it was out of breach. Should it happen to fire in that condition… KABOOM! I can see this gun being fun to use for plinking, but only after the reliability issues are ironed out.

And the new barrel has not completely resolved the keyhole problem, again a reliability issue…

@Z3Accordmike - thanks for watching! I trust my life to my FsN, it’s reliable and I can shoot very accurately with it. My new home defense weapon is actually my AR57 SBR, suppressed.

The PMR-30 was purchased just to compare the 22 magnum ballistics from a pistol length barrel to the FsN’s ballistics. I will never use it as anything more than a plinking gun (assuming it doesn’t KB on me, lol) because it simply has not proven reliable as of yet!

  12. 12 Hellathome said at 5:32 am on July 22nd, 2011:

It is a .22 dont forget that. Did you have fun shooting the gun?
The slide gets easier to pull back after shooting. I have not shot with the new barrel yet.
I think for a plinker it is fun to shot and yes the cost was a little high but we could have waited for the price to drop. Mine dose lock back with one round in it but that is no biggy to me. 29 or 30 how is counting. Plus it make them thank your out of ammo when you really one one more round in the gun. LOL

Nice review, a couple weeks ago a guy at work was telling me about this gun and his interest in purchasing one. This is some great info that i will pass along to him.
I may be a little biased, your videos on the Five-seveN were the reason that i purchased one and it has been a great gun

Kel-Tec’s usually jam a lot in the first 50-100 rounds… I’d give it some more testing and see what happens.. Overall nice review though

Thanks for the review. My friend and I were contemplating getting one, but they don’t look very worthwhile
