Benjamin Trail NP XL - .22 cal Gas Ram “ultra magnum” (At least that is what I call it..!)

Posted: October 6th, 2010 | Author: zackpow | Filed under: 22 Magnum Rifles | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |

www.pyramydair.com So my first experience with Crosman (Benjamin’s) new super magnum gas ram powerhouse started out rocky, but ended like a dream. Well over 900 FPS with lead pellets and 800 fps with moderately heavy lead pellets. Shooting tight groups will take a lot of practice and patience. The trigger system needs a lot of work, and the recoil, while better than a metal spring, is still very severe and require excellent technique to shoot well. But… if you can get it all to work together, you can deliver a lot of energy on target. Good rifle that could be better. Let’s all encourage Crosman to BUILD A BETTER TRIGGER!!!.

Not sure about stock levels or product changes… My tests were at 20 yards.. This gun hits well out to 70 and 80 yards however.

What was your distance on the accuracy test for the NP XL? / for any of the guns you test?

I noticed that Pyramid Air has these in stock, but Crosman doesn’t. Would you suspect that there is a new version of the NP XL on the way? US made maybe? Better trigger maybe? Your thoughts? Save my pennies, or don’t hold my breath?

    Thanks. Good vids btw

You may have a problem barrel or just a bad gun. This is one of the issues with the Chinese imports, their are plagued with quality control issues and it is not just with Crosman. I’ve seen it with virtually every brand. Bam, TechForce, Crosman, Stoeger, etc..

.22 is better.. I would not hunt wild boar with a pellet gun.

GRT III won’t give me any samples and PA won’t let me modify the gun without buying it first… I’d love to test it, but I don’t see it happening right now.

rick, i have a trail all weather dont watn to use the wingdage turrets to compensate for gross adjustments. are there any gunsmiths that will shim the elevation so as to use the turrets for finer adjustments. I think the picatiniy rail was not welded properly or the rings are sup-par. maybe I should just get the XL. please help I’m about to return the whole thing.

Wow, looks like a true alternative to an RWS 350 Magnum! Would LOVE to see what a good trigger and a tune would do for this one!

it very well could… I’d expect it to come down just a little more.. but no doubt the NP XL is one of the most powerful break barrels out there.

If your heart is set on the illumination and the greater magnification, you are still better off getting the Trail NP XL, then buying that scope at Wal-Mart for $70.
It’s the Centerpoint, and I have one, and I’m quite happy with it.
Judging by the immense popularity of the regular Trail NP and Trail NP XL, and the near absence of Super Streaks, it seems clear which rifle is winning with airgunners in the know.

    @mick50382
From what I have read from other folks who use them, the Crow Magnums do very well on soft game (starlings, sparrows, pigeons, and rats) within 50 yards, and tougher critters such as squirrels, groundhogs, and crows within about 25 yards, and yes that was with the Trail NP XL.
The Predators do a bit better due to the tip, enabling you to stretch the range to 50 yards for the tougher critters.
If you want maximum performance for all ranges, the medium to heavy domes rule, though.

    hey Rick,
what would be the best gun to get with a very high velocity and good accuracy but not a very high price

  21. 21 mick50382 said at 3:06 am on October 6th, 2010:

Just received the Benjamin XL .22

Did the $10 for 10 and got a certificate with the following Chrony results with JSB Diabolo Exact 14.3 gr.:

    1. 1096 38 ft/lbs
    2. 916 26.59
    3. 941 28.12
    4. 955 28.97
    5. 958 29.15
    6. 959 29.21
    7. 944 28.32
    8. 966 29.64
    9. 957 29.09
    10. 909 26.24
    11. 958 29.15

Ave. (not including highest and lowest extreme) = 950 fps @ 28.66

Should the gun stay this powerful after break-in?

    @AirRepair2

Thanks for the tip. I glad that trigger works in this gun. With a better trigger, this should be a real performer.

Now see you are asking me a physics question… and frankly I’d just be guessing! That kind of question would be perfectly suited for the guys over at PyramydAir’s blog. When you find the answer, let us know!

The superstreak is a terrible gun.. the Trail is not bad in .22. I’ve not tested it in .177.

Hey Rick…I know it is more money, but Charlie Da Tuna has the GRT-III trigger that is a direct drop-in replacement for this rifle. For about $32 and 10 minutes of my time, I installed one in my Benjamin NP Trail All-Weather rifle and now I am happier than ever. Made a seriously big difference. It is the little-brother to my Beeman Crowmagnum III and reminds me of my old Theoben Sirocco somewhat.
